Character Name: Samwise Gamgee
Series: Lord of the Rings
Age: 62 (approximate human equivalent: early 40s)
From When?: From during his visit to Gondor in the year 21 (Fourth Age).

Warden Justification:
Sam is a man of service, strength, and hope. While he's always taken pride in the first of these, learning that the second two were true was a long, hard road, one where he's finally on the last downhill slope. He understands the struggle in being taken out of the place you expected to occupy in the world, taught a new way to perceive yourself, and set back down no longer quite fitting. He's also faced temptation, he's killed and he's wanted to kill, and he's overcome those things. He's consciously aware of these struggles as tools, and will use them for any inmate. He's also been a leader of his people, elected precisely because of his dedication to recovery.

Item:
A broach of a green glass leaf, wound around with silver. It shows flickers of vision, and tugs towards his inmate when he's trying to find them.

Abilities/Powers:
Sam has no magic or powers, but his sight and hearing are a little keener than a human's, especially in the dusk, and he's surprisingly good at being silent and discreet. Very good aim throwing rocks. Master of potatoes.

Wardening Strategies and Philosophies:
Sam is older now, and he has steadied in many ways with the tremendous trust that he has been shown by his community, his friends, and his family.

He'll take his role as warden seriously, and treat it the way he did being Frodo's gardener. Cultivation here, ruthless weeding there. Sometimes you have to know which branches to cut to kill the root breaking the foundation, and sometimes you have to plant the right things together so they all grow better. And sometimes there's an awful dangerous quest but that's still part of the duty. The only things he's ever heard about imprisonment or prisons have been vicious, unfair, and terrible, so he understands 'warden' to mean much more of 'caretaker' than 'jailer' anyway. He will love whoever he is ultimately paired with, in the end, because it isn't in Samwise to serve and not love.

That love is one of his strengths – it isn't infatuation, it doesn't blind him from seeing the flaws, but it convinces him irrevocably that the person in question is capable of coming back from any error, outgrowing any stunting. It's faith, and it's the trade of trust for trust. His stubbornness is less weakness than it was before – Sam has grown more able to accept challenges to his preferred order of things, and will only dig his heels in when he thinks something truly important is in jeopardy.

His greatest weakness now as a warden will likely be that he is going to be deeply lonely here. He has a large family at home, and will miss them to distraction. It may make him vulnerable to certain kinds of manipulation, as well as impatient for his Deal.

Inmates who'd be best for him are those who have a lot of internal justifications for why the things they've been doing are the best path for everyone, rather than those who just put themselves first. Active malice is another thing that would be a problem for him – he's less contemptuous than he would have been in his youth, but would struggle to show them the trust that he's sure is the key to their path forward.

Deal: While Sam was in Gondor, he received word of a forest fire in the Shire, one that destroyed many homes and the Brandywine dam, flooding enough farmland that this will be a hard winter for many. He wants that fire undone.

Video
[Samwise remembers the comms tablet, and when he finds it in the uncomfortably empty copy of Bag End, he only carries it around for a little while before he sets it up. He sits at his work-worn desk the way he always did to listen to folk's troubles, with his hands folded in front of himself.]

Well, I'm back. I don't hope any of you'll remember me, but I was 'ere a spell ago. More'n twenty years, my count. My name is Samwise the G- Samwise Gamgee.

Don't know 'ow the Admiral knew I was needin', but he's seen fit to let me come back. I'll be workin' in the kitchen if you'll 'ave me, and jus' see if you can stop me workin' in the gardens.

[He starts to reach forward to turn it off, but pauses, and folds his hands again.]

If any of you do know me, a few familiar faces would be right lovely. New ones too, if anyone wants to come by. I'll be havin' a welcome dinner, table's plenty big.

Sample RP:

Sam's been cooking all his life. Never what you call fancy, nothing fine like he's eaten in Gondor or with the elves or even that strange cottage in the old forest, but hearty fare, the sort to fill a belly and let you work all day. As a hobbitling, he did for himself and his old Gaffer after his sisters and brothers all moved away, and cooked sometimes for dear Frodo so he'd be sure he had a hot meal. And then he married Rosie, and found delight in cooking for her and beside her. And then the children came, and it takes two to cook for thirteen. Bag End's kitchen with its long wooden sideboards and the broad common table might be his favorite place in all the world.

The Barge's kitchen, despite its miracles of refrigerator and hot tap, is not. The steel surfaces make him cold just to look at them, and they're no good for kneading bread.

But cooking is cooking, and while Sam stirs stew in the cast iron pot on the hearth tucked into a back corner, he can almost imagine that the soft hum of conversation in the dining room is the chatter of his own family. Pretend that he isn't here alone, again. He clears his throat, and tastes the stew from a spoon. It's fine, but he looks around to see who's near anyway.

“Can you 'and me some of that sumac?” he asks, simply for the sake of cooking with another soul again.

Special Notes: Sam has been here before! Some of this app is copy-pasted, for he has not changed hugely since his last pull point, but I've made sure to highlight where he has. It's been over twenty years, and he's at the midway point of his life. The events of the fire and dam-burst are headcanon, to give him a deal to reach for. Canon touches the broad points of his life after Frodo leaves, but only really births, deaths, and very notable events. I'll be filling it in more as I go.
